On the Paseo: Do you attend San Jose Rep performances? Or frequent Camera 12? Theater- and moviegoers have new options nearby on the Paseo de San Antonio in downtown San Jose. Recently opened is Vyne Bistro, a modernist wine bar serving cheese plates, panini, salads, risotto and desserts, plus libations ranging from ice cider to sake (although the emphasis is clearly on red and white wines from around the globe). Coming in May or June is Whispers Cafe & Creperie. Long a neighborhood favorite in Belmont, this restaurant has earned a strong following for its crepes savory and sweet, omelets, benedictions (versions of eggs Benedict), lunches and dinners. Now the restaurant is expanding south, and in a big way. After opening in March in the Brokaw North center in San Jose, Whispers will take over the prime spot that formerly housed Hawgs Seafood, and then a club called Savu. Dungeness days: It's high season for Dungeness crab, and local restaurants are making the most of the catch. First up is the Lark Creek Restaurant Group, which always devotes the month of February to crab-centric cuisine. Among the dishes for this 24th annual Crab Festival: butter-poached crab with avocado and citrus at Parcel 104 in Santa Clara; coconut crab with anise rice and bok choy at Lark Creek Blue in San Jose; and crab cakes with lemon aioli and apple-fennel slaw at Yankee Pier in Lafayette. At month's end, the Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association will present Crab & Wine Restaurant Week, a festival of special crab dishes paired with local wines. On Feb. 24, all six restaurants (Gabriella, Michael's on Main, Paradise Beach, Sanderlings, Stonehouse and Wine Cellar) will participate from 1 to 4 p.m. Then, from Feb. 25 to March 1, they will host happy hour pairings from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Dates vary, so check the offerings at www.scmwa.com.
