The Academy Awards are glitzy, no doubt, but Oscars' equivalent in the cookbook world is the IACPs. For the last 27 years, the International Association of Culinary Professionals has rolled out the red carpet for the glitterati of the culinary stage, awarding prizes for best cookbook in categories ranging from best baking to first book.
IACP announced the 2013 awards finalists Wednesday, yielding a list IACP executive director Meredith Deeds called "some of the greatest works by food and culinary professionals throughout the industry." The awards ceremony will be April 9 in San Francisco.
You'll find many familiar names on the list of finalists, including Charles Phan from San Francisco's Slanted Door and Thomas Keller of French Laundry and Bouchon Bakery fame.
Phan's book, "Vietnamese Home Cooking" (Ten Speed Press, $35, 256 pages), is a finalist in the best chef/restaurant cookbook category. It's also a finalist for the Julia Child Award for best first book, a distinction shared with Atherton native Nancy Singleton Hachisu and her book, "Japanese Farm Food" (Andrews McMeel, $35, 400 pages).
Thomas Keller and Sebastien Rouxel's book, "Bouchon Bakery" (Artisan, $50, 400 pages), is a finalist for best chef/restaurant cookbook and best food photography.
San Francisco food writer Andrea Nguyen is nominated in the single subject category for her book "Asian Tofu: Discover the Best, Make Your Own and Cook It at Home" (Ten Speed Press, $30, 240 pages).
Other names - for example, Diane Morgan, Martha Holmberg and Liz Gutman - may ring a bell because they have been featured in our food and wine coverage so recently.
In the noncookbook categories, San Francisco-based Chow.com is a finalist for best culinary website, and food writer and restaurateur Joanne Weir - co-owner of Copita in Sausalito - is a finalist for culinary tour operator of the year.
