Menage a Ike's: Cue the rejoicing, sandwich fans. The eagerly anticipated Ike's, a sandwich shop with a cult following, has opened its doors in downtown Walnut Creek, just a hop and a skip from The Cheesecake Factory. Now you too can enjoy a Menage a Trois or one of the other tasty sandwiches -- dozens of them, catering to omnivorous, vegan or vegetarian tastes -- made with bizarre and wonderful condiments, including a Godfather Sauce and neon-hued spreads. Find the newest Ike's at 1159 Locust St. Peek at the menu at www.ilikeikesplace.com.
Ale lang syne: Remember the beer-infused cupcake contest that Pyramid Alehouse hosted during SF Beer Week? The winning cupcake, a Blueberry Oatmeal Stout Crumble made by Christina Walker, is on the dessert menu this month at both the Walnut Creek (1410 Locust St.) and Berkeley (901 Gilman St.) alehouses. Cheers!
Lunch on the run: Jon Kosorek, of Jon's Street Eats food truck fame, has just launched a bricks-and-mortar eatery in downtown Oakland. The new lunch spot is devoted to local produce and whole animal fare and named, appropriately, Marrow. Menu changes daily, but a recent peek included a green goddess salad ($7), grilled asparagus with a soft egg ($5), beef fat fries ($3) and a Reuben sandwich ($12). Details: 325 19th St.; marrowoakland.com.
Berkeley bistro: Jason Kwon, the New York transplant who reinvented Berkeley's Joshu-ya as a Japanese brasserie, has another eatery project on the books. He's taken over Ann's Kitchen, the breakfast spot at 2498 Telegraph Ave., and plans to turn it into a brunch-centric Bleeker Street Bistro this summer. It's a bid, Kwon says, "to continue with the gourmet-ification of Telegraph Avenue. Currently there are Joshu-ya Brasserie and Kiraku. The local community deserves better and I want to give it to them." Bleeker Street will have a philanthropic angle as well, providing support to orphanages through one of Kwon's favorite organizations, Build Hope International.
