Anti-gun rant was shallow

A letter writer (May 30) promoted a vacuous, ludicrous notion that there is nothing inherently virtuous about gun ownership and usage. I can assure him that there is nothing inherently virtuous about opposing gun ownership and usage.

A day hardly passes without news of lawlessness and crimes perpetrated by individuals and guns in virtually all areas of the United States. Some states are releasing convicts because of space considerations. Those who fail to recognize or are ignorant of the fact that attacks and other crimes against citizens and property are serious issues are potential sitting ducks naively awaiting attacks by the voracious beasts. Responsible gun ownership and proper usage of guns by citizens to repel the savage outlaws is "inherently virtuous" beyond description.

The writer cites the "bullying tactics" of the NRA. What hogwash. The NRA conducts innumerable seminars nationwide on gun safety and responsibility.

There will never be a "gun-safe society" because conscienceless criminals do not obey "gun control" laws. I wonder if the writer is intelligent and honest enough to acknowledge this irrefutable truth?

Tax sodas, fight obesity

Support SB 622, a bill designed to tax sugary drinks in the state of California! This bill is important because 17 percent of children and a quarter of the adult population in our state are obese.

This bill targets sugary drinks that are a huge factor in the rise of obesity. A Harvard study found that soda taxes, like this one, can be expected to reduce consumption of the targeted drinks by 10 percent. This would save the state in adult health care costs, as obesity-related problems already cost our state $15.2 billion, according to the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, making this no longer a matter of personal responsibility but a social concern. I urge you to contact your state senators by calling or emailing their offices in support of this measure.

Just drink diet soda

There would seem to be a simple answer to the dilemma of sugary drinks and fighting obesity for those who can't quit the habit: diet soda.

If one argues that the taste is different, those of us who drank the real Coca Cola and Pepsi that came in a bottle (pre-diet soda days) can testify that the formula for Coke's and Pepsi's nowadays is different and the taste of these top-selling sodas in their sugary form is already not the same. Each of the major companies offers a variety of diet sodas, all of which come extremely close to their sugary counterparts, so if you can't switch to water, which is the healthiest beverage of all, then try the diet versions, which have no sugar and low or no calories.

Stop human trafficking

As defined by the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, human trafficking is "sex trafficking in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud or coercion."

Worldwide, there are 21 million people enslaved by this form of modern-day slavery. Seven percent of this global operation takes place in the United States. Human trafficking is a national issue, and the solution starts with shutting down websites used as business platforms for pimps.

We are rallying police task forces to shut down these operations that use the Internet as a business tool in exploiting victims. The Polaris Project labels the Internet as the number-one platform for the advertising and selling of sex slaves in the United States. In 2008, people posted 2,800 ads for prostituted children on Craigslist. Another similar website is Backpage.com. These websites allow pimps to easily sell underage girls for sex, enabling patrons to easily purchase them. If this section of the website was shut down, it would make it harder to access customers or sellers in this business, therefore depleting the market. We plan to increase acknowledgment and recognition by the government on this specific issue and to shut down human trafficking operations that plague this country

Obama worst president ever

With so many scandals to choose from, IRS, Benghazi, AP, Fast and Furious, Solyndra, GSA, etc., something happened several weeks ago that got little notice in the mainstream Obama press.

Obama forced two U.S. Marines to break protocol and regulations when he ordered them to hold umbrellas for himself and the Turkish Prime Minister during a Rose Garden news conference. A little shower and Obama couldn't find one of his many aides to hold the umbrellas. Marines aren't butlers. Marines are warriors -- warriors who would have gladly gone into Benghazi to help the Americans there under attack.

Ambassador Stevens requested additional security at the consulate and was denied by Obama and Clinton. So, for eight hours the Americans are under attack, calling for help, and what is our brave commander-in-chief doing? Nothing. Maybe having dinner and watching basketball. He tells the greatest military in the world to stand down and lets four brave Americans get murdered.

Then at a news conference where he is being asked about Benghazi, a little shower breaks out, and Obama, showing a lack of respect for all Marines and all our men and women who wear a uniform, makes them hold umbrellas so his pretty suit doesn't get wet. As a president, Obama is the worst ever, as a commander-in-chief, Obama is a disgrace and an embarrassment.
