Alamo resident and De La Salle High sophmore Zach Scherman traveled to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic from Aug. 7-11 to play with the under-16 U.S. national team in the Latin American Baseball Classic.

Scherman pitched the semifinal game against Lajara of the Dominican Republican, throwing a complete game of seven innings. He allowed only two hits and two earned runs and had eight strikeouts as the Americans won 8-4.

Team USA went on to play Enrique Cruz of Dominican Republic and won the championship. Scherman was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
