Hollywood's silence on Syria is deafening

Have you noticed a remarkable quiet lately? Hollywood types such as Alec Baldwin, Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, and Barbra Streisand constantly spoke about how terrible the war in Iraq was -- and how misguided President Bush was for pursuing it. But we haven't heard a word from them about Syria.

Not only is the president proposing to "declare war" on Syria, but Hollywood apparently has forgotten Saddam Hussein killed more than 10 times as many Kurds with chemical weapons than died in Syria. And yet -- silence. Can you say "hypocrite?"

It should also not be surprising that Britain rebuffed the president's plans. Not only did the United Kingdom get burned over bad intelligence, but they no doubt remember that President Obama is the one who removed the bust of Winston Churchill from the White House, that he publicly stated France was America's "strongest friend and ally," that he sided with Argentina in the dispute over the Falkland Islands (and keeps insisting on calling them "the Malvinas"), and that he gave the Russians secret and sensitive information on Britain's nuclear capabilities to induce them to sign a treaty with America.

Who voted to re-elect him, anyway? And why?

Let's not start yet another war

Please do not support more war! We have not the right to police the world. Our adventure in Iraq a second time was unfounded ... Afghanistan is still going.

I grew up in World War II. The propaganda was: This is the last war. No more wars. Since then we have been in war with Korea, Vietnam, Granada, Somalia, Iraq (twice and still going) Afghanistan, perhaps more.

Spend our money on policing our inner cities immersed in crimes and constant shooting of innocent people, with Oakland among the worst! Spend our money on education, studying disease, space, feeding and providing for our poor and homeless.

Obama, get real! Killing more people (whether limited, only the military people, presumably) or whatever the parameters is crazy and wrong.

Stop War! War is wrong ... we must develop ways to negotiate other than war to get along with others and they with us. Let's put up signs, wear pins, blast the media with "No More War" signs. People do not want war! Stop war!

Stop president before it's too late for nation

What's next, ladies and gentlemen? First we have socialized medicine (Obamacare) jammed down our throats, and now we're going to be forced into a socialized education system named "Common Core."

I guess Obama and his cronies think the 50 states of the good old U.S.A. are too stupid to educate their own kids. Yes, the Feds are funding this new program, and that falls on us, the taxpayers! Bill Gates will get richer by supplying iPads for all of the students at taxpayer expense. Don't take my word for it, go online and check it out.

We've already lost the right to say a prayer in public, and the military chaplains are no longer permitted to mention Jesus Christ! Come on, people stand up for your rights! We veterans served this country because we believed in a democratic government and not socialism. The G.I.s have always depended on their chaplains during a time of war! It's just one more freedom we are losing. Apathy and greed will destroy this beautiful country. Come on America, wake up!

Others share PG&E's blame for explosion

In the years since the explosion, I have never read an article or a letter about how the County of San Mateo or the City of San Bruno ever allowed a neighborhood and housing to be built near a 36" high-pressure natural gas pipeline.

In the interest of disclosure, I worked for PG&E from 1967 to 1993 in the area of corporate mainframe computing. The county and city knew about the pipeline. It had to be permitted by the county before it was built, and inspections approved during construction. The pipeline was a matter of public record. Why did the county and city approve housing in such proximity to a high-pressure pipeline? Have they no responsibility to homeowners and taxpayers? How did the director of emergency planning not know the pipeline was there and plan for possible emergency contingencies? He was quoted in your newspaper saying he did not know of the pipeline's existence.

Obamacare options have been put forth

Several people have written to say that those of us who oppose Obamacare have not proposed any alternatives.

I have heard several alternatives from doctors, those in Congress and others. Mike Huckabee laid out a very good plan on his Fox News TV program last month. I would hope those who are interested would check out this plan.

Plan would steal suburbs' control, funds

"Plan Bay Area," the term favored now by left-wing politicians and vastly overcompensated bureaucrats at the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Association of Bay Area Governments, was known previously as "One Bay Area."

That was perhaps too reminiscent of "Building One America," the master plan devised by Barack Obama's radical community-organizing trainer and confidante Mike Kruglik, who now advises the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department.

Harvard Ph.D. and social anthropologist Stanley Kurtz, in his book "Spreading the Wealth," exposed the scheme last year as a pernicious effort disguised as a "Sustainable Communities Initiative" to eliminate municipal planning control by individual suburban communities.

The plan's ultimate objectives include accelerated "tax-base sharing" with inner cities, ever-tightening "growth boundaries," and regionally-directed "economic integration" -- i.e., coerced rezoning, low-income housing mandates and new tax-funded housing subsidies.

Despite numerous community meetings flooded with MTC/ABAG propaganda and salted with special-interest activists, MTC/ABAG's own 2013 poll showed substantial majorities in eight of nine Bay Area counties -- and a plurality even in San Francisco -- favoring local city and county control of planning over Plan Bay Area's intended regional takeover.
