EBAL football season set to kick off

  • The East Bay Athletic League football season kicks off Sept. 27, and the chase for the league title might come down to which team plays the best defense in a circuit of high-powered offenses. After a bye week, Amador Valley will put its 3-0 mark on the line against Monte Vista (1-2). California (2-1), the 2012 EBAL co-champion with San Ramon Valley, will host Granada (3-1), which is seeking a fourth straight win. Livermore (2-2) travels to red-hot Foothill (4-0), which is averaging 41.5 points a game. San Ramon Valley (1-2), playing one of the toughest schedules in the region, is at De La Salle (4-0).

    SRV boys win water polo championship

  • The San Ramon Valley boys water polo team topped Menlo School-Atherton 11-10 in the championship game of the prestigious Scott Roche Invitational on Sept. 21. The Wolves trounced Rio Americano 13-4 in the semifinals. The Wolves girls team beat Campolindo 6-3 in the championship of the Acalanes Tournament on Sept. 14.

    White leads Monte Vista girls golf

  • Hailey White continued her sharp play with a 3-over 38 at Crow Canyon Country Club, helping the first-place Mustangs beat San Ramon Valley 207-251 in Sept. 17 EBAL action. Much-improved Monte Vista finished the first round of the league season with a 7-0 record.

    Foothill takes second

  • The Foothill boys water polo team finished second at the De Anza Invitational on Sept. 21. The Falcons lost 12-5 to Redwood-Larkspur in the championship match.

    Granada pounds Newark

  • The Granada football team got two touchdowns on special teams in an impressive 42-0 win over Newark Memorial on Sept. 20 to conclude nonleague play. Colton Paynter made a 47-yard scoring run on a blocked punt return, and Javonn Williams scored one of his two touchdowns on a 51-yard punt return.

  • Valley Christian at El Cerrito, football, Sept. 28, 7 p.m. -- The Vikings (2-2) open play in the Tri-County Rock Division against the powerful Gauchos (2-2)

  • Monte Vista at Amador Valley, football, Sept. 27, 7 p.m. -- The Mustangs and Dons meet to kick off the EBAL season. In 2012, the Dons rallied for a 24-21 win over the Mustangs in Danville.

  • San Ramon Valley at De La Salle, football, Sept. 27, 7 p.m. -- The Wolves have a strong offense, but will their defense be able to stop a De La Salle team that's hitting its stride?

  • Stanford Invitational, cross country, Sept. 28, noon -- Elite runners will head to Palo Alto for this prestigious meet.

  • Michael Pangelinan Jr., Dougherty Valley, -- Pangelinan carried 16 times for 201 yards and scored the winning touchdown on a 66-yard run as the Wildcats took a thrilling 34-30 win over Antioch on Sept. 20.

  • Brooke Starn, Monte Vista cross country -- Starn took first place in the De La Salle/Carondelet Invitational on Sept. 21 at Newhall Park in Concord, leading the Mustangs girls team to a runner-up team finish with 66 points. Her winning time was 18 minutes, 55 seconds on the 3.0-mile course.

  • Mikey Williams, San Ramon Valley boys water polo, So. -- Williams had a team-high four goals to go along with three steals, helping the Wolves beat Menlo 11-10 in the championship of the Scott Roche Invitational on Sept. 21.

  • Kimberly Liu, Amador Valley, Sr. -- Liu took first place at the Lone Tree Tournament on Sept. 16 with a 3-over 75 at Lone Tree Golf Course.
