Local kids sold a record amount of Halloween candy to their orthodontist and won money for their school. More than 1,241 pounds of candy was collected this past holiday, the most ever collected in this annual campaign.

Patients of orthodontist Sandy Bigman in San Ramon brought in their bags of Halloween candy and received $1 per pound of candy. The patients either kept the money or donated the money back to their school. Also, Walt Disney Elementary School in San Ramon won a $500 check from Bigman for bringing in the most candy. Those Walt Disney students brought in more than 659 pounds of candy. This is the second year in a row that Walt Disney School was declared the winner of this contest. Bigman's office is donating the candy to the Blue Star Moms so they can send some sweet snacks off to the troops overseas. They are also donating candy to Oakland Children's Hospital and the Kaiser Pediatric Oncology Department in Oakland.

Backing literacy: Six local Rotary clubs in the San Ramon Valley joined forces to support literacy in the community's public schools for the 16th straight year. Every third-grader in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District received a printed dictionary from the area Rotary Clubs including San Ramon, San Ramon Valley, Dougherty Valley San Ramon, Alamo, Danville and Danville/Sycamore.

More than 2,400 dictionaries were distributed to third-graders in the 21 district elementary schools. Barry Toby, president of the Rotary Club of San Ramon, says club members always look forward to taking part in this annual event that is a way for all six clubs in the community to unite in the common purpose of supporting literacy in the schools.
