Wolves win thriller for volleyball crown

  • The San Ramon Valley girls volleyball team prevailed in thrillers in the semifinals and finals of the North Coast Section Division I playoffs to win the program's second section title in the past three years. San Ramon Valley, which finished 32-3, rallied past visiting No. 3 Heritage 22-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-22 on Nov. 23 in the championship match. The Wolves outlasted East Bay Athletic League rival California in five games in the semifinals on Nov. 20. The scores were 25-20, 20-25, 14-25, 27-25, 15-13. Five EBAL teams advanced to the quarters and three to the semifinals, but Heritage upset No. 2 Monte Vista in five games to advance to the finals. The scores were 23-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-27, 15-5.

    California earns rematch with Pirates

  • Host California used power football to break a 17-17 tie at halftime with EBAL rival San Ramon Valley and take a 31-24 win over San Ramon Valley in the North Coast Section Division Division I quarterfinals on Nov. 23. The No. 3 seeded Grizzlies will get a rematch with No. 2 Pittsburg in the semifinals on Nov. 30. The Pirates edged the Grizzlies 35-33 on Sept. 6 in the second week of the season. California fell to James Logan last season in the section semifinals.

    Valley Christian roars into NCS Div. V final

  • Vince Volpatti and Theman Taylor III each ran for two touchdowns, leading the Valley Christian High football team to a 34-6 win over Ferndale on Nov. 22 in the North Coast Section Division V semifinals. The No. 2-seeded Vikings (9-3) will attempt to earn their first NCS title against No. 5 Salesian (7-5) in the championship game on Nov. 30 at Chabot College. Valley Christian defeated Salesian 21-22 on Nov. 9 in Tri-County League-Rock Division action. Volpatti carried 19 times for 188 yards. He scored the Vikings' third touchdown on a 77-yard run, and they never looked back.

    Bayliss wins cross country Div. I race

  • In a showcase race for EBAL talent, San Ramon Valley junior Christine Bayliss took the individual title at the North Coast Section Division Division I championships on Nov. 23 at Hayward High in a time of 17 minutes, 30 seconds on the 3.0-mile course. Granada's Megan McCandless was second, Monte Vista's Brooke Starn was third and California's Madison Ricks was fourth. EBAL runners took six of the top seven places overall, with Monte Vista winning the team title with 81 points, besting rival San Ramon Valley by three points and third-place Amador Valley by six.

  • CIF Championships, cross country, Nov. 30, 8:30 a.m. -- The EBAL's best and brightest runners will vie for coveted state medals at Woodward Park in Fresno.

  • Salesian vs. Valley Christian, football, Nov. 30, 7 p.m. -- The No. 2-seeded Vikings will vie for the program's first NCS football title in the Division V championship game at Chabot College.

  • Rickimae Torres, Dougherty Valley tennis -- The Wildcats senior earned a fourth consecutive trip to the NCS Division I singles semifinals with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Heritage's Courtney Samuda in the quarterfinals on Nov. 21.

  • Lindsay Rood, Monte Vista girls soccer -- The junior scored two goals as the Mustangs won their season opener 4-0 over Clayton Valley Charter on Nov. 21.

  • Suliman Khorami, Dublin boys soccer -- The Gaels sophomore had two goals in a 4-0 nonleague win over Moreau Catholic on Nov. 22.
