DANVILLE -- A celebration Tuesday of all things Danville pulled in a big crowd to the Danville Community Center, as residents and town officials honored the town's true stars -- the volunteers who make things work.

The event also included the annual voting and swearing in by the Town Council of its new mayor. By unanimous vote, vice mayor Robert Storer was chosen mayor and Mike Doyle vice mayor.

The 32st annual Community Service Awards included the following volunteer of the year awards:

Parks & Leisure Services Commission: Ed Angle, volunteer of the year

Arts Commission: Rick and Barbara Mahan, volunteers of the year

Volunteer of the Year: Ricardo Leon

The following received the town's Award of Merit:

Hannah McAlister: for her volunteerism, leadership and work with children with disabilities.

Lori Garcia: for organizing the Danville Relay for Life event and raising funds for the American Cancer Society.

Susie Wingate: for appearing as Snow Angel at the annual Lighting of the Old Oak Tree for the past 19 years.

Lee Halverson: for dedication and service to the veterans community.

The winners of architectural awards are:

Commercial remodel: Incontro Ristorante, 455 Hartz Ave.; Architect/Contractor: GEM Builders; Owner: Lawrence and Patricia Mooney

Public/semi-public design: Veterans Memorial Building, 400 Hartz Ave.; Builder: Zovich and Sons Inc.; Architect: Architectural Resources Group Inc.

Heritage resource design: Weinberg Commercial Development, 160 E. Prospect Ave., Owner: Todd Weinberg; Archtect: Barry Volkmann Architects; Builder: Branagh Development

Michael K. Shimansky Community Service Award: Packs with Love, Madi and Kinsey Mascali, for collecting, cleaning and filling more than 3,200 backpacks for homeless and less fortunate elementary students.

Award of Special Recognition: David Miller, for organizing Danville Hot Summer Nights car shows.

The Danville Award: Role Players Ensemble, for providing high quality theater in the San Ramon Valley for the past 26 years.
