Wolves win Crusader Classic championship

  • The San Ramon Valley High boys basketball team beat Archbishop Riordan-San Francisco 39-33 on Dec. 7 in the championship game of the Crusader Classic. Wolves 6-foot-9 senior David Gunn was named tournament MVP. Center Gregg Polosky and guard Jerry Karczewski were named to the all-tournament team. Keith Smith scored a game-high 13 points in the final. The Wolves (3-0) outscored Riordan 27-15 in the second half, including limiting Riordan to two points in the third quarter.

    Monte Vista boys win Tip-Off Classic crown

  • The Monte Vista boys basketball team beat Montgomery-Santa Rosa 54-49 in the championship game of the Russ Peterich Tip-Off Classic on Dec. 7, led by Spencer Rust's game-high 19 points. Rust was 9 for 9 from the free throw line. The Mustangs' Grant Jackson scored 10 points and was named tournament MVP. Rishi Satoor added 11 points as the Mustangs improved to 4-0.

    Amador Valley takes Gold Dust tourney

  • The Amador Valley boys basketball team won the Gold Dust tournament with a 52-51 win on Dec. 7 over Del Oro in the championship game. Dons junior forward Stokley Chaffee was selected tournament MVP after scoring 20 points against Del Oro. Senior center Glenn Leininger made the all-tournament team.

    Foothill boys soccer strikes gold in Classic

  • The Foothill High boys soccer team got back-to-back goals by Jorge Beltran assisted by Alex Lee and took a 3-1 win over East Bay Athletic League rival California in the championship match of the Winter Classic Gold Division on Dec. 7. Nick Goldstein scored on a penalty kick in the 21st minute to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Then the Lee-to-Beltran combination struck twice to effectively seal it.

    Matadors triumph in Rob Vares tournament

  • The Granada boys basketball team topped Washington 62-59 in the championship game of the Rob Vares tournament on Dec. 7. Luis Ramirez had 14 points and was named tournament MVP, and Kameron Johnson and Collin Stafford, who had a team-high 17 points in the final, were named to the all-tournament team.

  • Granada Holiday Invitational, boys basketball, Dec. 12, TBA -- The Matadors, after taking the Rob Vares championship, will host one of the area's most entertaining tournaments.

  • Amador Basketball Classic, boys basketball, Dec. 13, TBA -- The Dons, coming off their title in the Gold Dust Tournament, host their annual event.

  • Charles Zaloumis, Monte Vista soccer -- Zaloumis had a goal and two assists as the Mustangs rallied to beat College Park 4-1 in the Tri-Valley Challenge on Dec. 4.

  • Jorge Beltran, Foothill soccer -- Beltran delivered two clutch goals as the Falcons beat California in the final of the Winter Classic Gold Division.

  • Caroline McMorrow, Foothill basketball -- The high-scoring McMorrow had 14 points in the Falcons' 64-26 win over Liberty on Dec. 4.

  • Xenia Perea, Dublin soccer -- Perea scored the winner in the 42nd minute off a Jesy Nelson assist in a 1-0 girls soccer victory over El Cerrito on Dec. 3.
