It's a rummage sale, it's a garage sale, it's a dog wash! And yes, it's all three rolled into one huge event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 26 at Los Cerros Middle School. Billed as a Rummage Sale and Dog Wash, the add-on is that community residents, students and businesses can rent a space and sell their own things for $50 per table (student entrepreneurs get a discounted price of $25). Proceeds from the event will benefit the Los Cerros Middle School Boosters' efforts to reduce class size and support the school.
Here's the opportunity to clean out that garage or closet or come and buy some cool goods at bargain prices, bearing in mind that "one person's stuff" (it will definitely not be "trash") is another's "treasure." Several gated communities in the area don't allow residents to have garage sales, and some of us don't want to hassle with Craigslist or eBay, so this sale can be considered a community service in addition to being a fun fundraiser.
Items that school parents and teachers are hoping will be donated include clothing, collectibles, sports equipment, household items, DVDs/CDs, handbags, books, stuffed animals, toys and games. All should be clean and in resalable condition, with no rips, stains or missing parts. They specify that no bedding, towels, undergarments, electronics or VHS tapes will be accepted. Drop off donated items from 7:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. April 18 at Los Cerros, 968 Blemer Road.
Now about that dog wash -- it's $5 ... bring your own dog and towel. How easy is that? In addition to the sale and dog wash, food, games and music will also be available. The rummage sale will take place in the school's multipurpose room, with teachers washing dogs in front of the school.
"It's a fun way to have a community day and we're also promoting reuse and resell," said Michelle Milosevich, parent coordinator of the event. To rent a vendor space, contact her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Museum community service: High school students from the San Ramon Valley Unified School District are invited to apply for the Blackhawk Museum Community Service Program, now in its seventh year. Called "Behind the Ropes and Under the Hoods," the program begins this month and continues through August.
Students are trained by participating in gallery walks as they learn about the cars in the museum. After completing three training classes, they can act as gallery hosts, interacting with visitors, answering questions and building communication skills.
The mandatory training classes are from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. April 23, April 30 and May 7, said program assistant Maria Chafin. Work schedules are flexible; students can gallery-host anytime the museum is open. Discussions on the first Wednesday of June, July and August will take place from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. The minimum service time is 20 hours to comply with schools' community service requirements and the community service can also be used on college and other applications.
"We've been really successful," said Chafin. "Usually the kids stick with it."
Students receive a certification of completion after serving a minimum of 20 hours, as well as a family membership to the museum for one year. They can pick up an application at their school Career Center or contact Chafin at 925-736-2277, x239, or email Nora Wagner at email@example.com.
