IRVINE -- The Danville HOOTS baseball team defeated the Colton Knight Hawks 2-1 in the first round of the Connie Mack West Regional tournament at Concordia University on Wednesday.
Colton took an early 1-0 lead, but pitcher Domenic Mazza, a recent Clayton Valley High graduate, threw a three-hitter to lead Danville.
The HOOTS tied the game in the fourth inning. After a Jesse Medrano single, David Elzig delivered an RBI single. In the sixth inning, Max Dutto hit a sacrifice fly with a runner at third to score the eventual winning run.
The HOOTS play the Utah Marshalls on Thursday night. Ten teams are competing in the west regional tournament, with the winner advancing to the World Series in Farmington, N.M.
The HOOTS have played in the World Series in two of the last three years, and were winners of the regional tournament last year. In 2009, Danville was led by Stephen Piscotty and Mark Appel, who were both early picks in this year's Major League Baseball draft.
