Mustangs overwhelm Grizzlies Monte Vista High (5-1, 3-1 EBAL) dominated the time of possession in a 44-26 win over previously unbeaten California (5-1, 2-1). Monte Vista's Nikita Zamora, a first-year varsity player, completed 23 of 36 passes for 302 yards, with Marco Zamora catching 14 passes for 205 yards. Zack Chang rushed for 171 yards on 31 carries. Tight end Mason Melin scored twice out of the wildcat formation, and speedy Ja;en Avery had a big 45-yard touchdown reception. Cal's Karris Johnson ran for 120 yards on 12 carries.

Wolves defense delivers win The surging San Ramon Valley High football team (3-3, 3-0 East Bay Athletic League) won its third straight game and took sole possession of first place with a 22-7 victory over Granada (3-3, 0-2) on Oct. 5. Wolves quarterback Cameron Birse passed for 188 yards and three touchdowns. The resilient Wolves followed a goal-line stand on defense with a 99-yard touchdown drive that upped the lead to 15-0 in the second quarter.

Balanced Dons top Cowboys Amador Valley High (3-3, 1-2 EBAL) showed balance on rushing and passing in a 34-20 win over Livermore (2-4, 0-2) on Oct. 5. Clutch receiver Kyle Greenan made a big play on defense right before the half, intercepting a Zach McPherson pass and returning it 30 yards for a touchdown.

On deck California at San Ramon Valley, football, Oct. 12, 7 p.m. -- The first-place Wolves look to extend a three-game winning streak against the Grizzlies, who will try to make amends after a stinging 44-26 loss against Monte Vista. San Ramon Valley dropped its first three games of the season against Buhach Colony-Atwater, Folsom and Logan. Alhambra at Dublin, football, Oct. 12, 7 p.m. -- The Gaels will look to rebound from a 31-14 loss against Las Lomas on Oct. 5, their first defeat in Diablo Foothill Athletic League play. Dublin is 4-1 at home this season, having only lost to visiting Amador Valley. EBAL tournament, girls golf, Oct. 15, 9 a.m. -- Another strong group of EBAL players will compete for bragging rights. Last year Amadpr Valley won the league team title and Dons senior Natalie Bodnar was the individual medalist. This year, Granada aces Yuri Ahn and Janelle Reali, Foothill twins Alex and Katie Sborov and Amador Valley's Kimberly Liu are among the favorites. California at San Ramon Valley, girls volleyball, Oct. 16, 6:30 p.m. -- The powerful Grizzlies and Wolves could decide first place in this EBAL showdown. The Grizzlies, led by senior captain Sabrina Clayton, beat the Wolves 3-1 on Sept. 20.

Janelle Reali, Granada golf -- Reali shot a 1-under 33 in the Matadors' big win over Carondelet 193-197 at Diablo Country Club on Oct. 4. Casey Soltis, Granada football -- Soltis ran for 107 yards on 18 carries in a loss to San Ramon Valley on Oct. 5. Amber Wright, Amador Valley volleyball -- Amber Wright, a senior outside hitter, had 13 kills, 19 digs and two aces in a thrilling 25-18, 20-25, 25-27, 25-19, 15-11 EBAL win over California on Oct. 2, handing the Grizzlies their first league defeat.
