Louisa T. Liu, of Pleasanton, graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts in philosophy and psychology at Boston University in Boston.

accomplishments

Jesse Reed Nestler, of San Ramon Troop 874, received his Eagle Scout Award at his Eagle Court of Honor on Sept. 16 at Athan Downs Park. For his Eagle project Jesse cleaned out and organized the earthquake emergency shed at Walt Disney Elementary school in San Ramon, as well as designed and built shelves to hold the emergency supplies. Jesse is the son of Mary and Paul Nestler and a 2012 graduate of California High School. He is attending UC Santa Cruz.

Deniz Askin will represent Pleasanton in the Miss California USA Pageant. The pageant will be in January, and this will be Deniz's first pageant.

The following San Ramon Valley Unified School District contestants writing on the subject, "How 9-11 Affected Volunteerism in America" were the winners of a contest sponsored by the Exchange Club of the San Ramon Valley.

Elementary school winners were Sophia Kraskowsky, Bollinger Canyon, first place, $150; Andrea Yu, Hidden Hills, second place, $100; and Madeline Watkins, John Baldwin, honorable mention (excellent but late entry).

Middle school winners were Varshini Sitarama, Pine Valley, first place, $300; Dian Choi, Gale Ranch, second place, $200; and Lauren Hui, Gale Ranch, third place, $100.

High School winners were Waverly Runion, Monte Vista, first place, $500; Mimi Evans, Diablo Valley, second place, $300; and Guatam Ramesh, Monte Vista, third place, $200.

All contestants received certificates of appreciation and a $5 ice cream gift certificate.
