Dougherty Valley wins DFAL opener

  • The Dougherty Valley High boys basketball team opened the Diablo Foothill Athletic League season with a 67-55 win over Alhambra on Jan. 5 The Wildcats, who improved to 10-3 overall, outscored Alhambra 35-26 in the second half to put the game away. Jordan Fujita had three 3-pointers and finished with 17 points for Dougherty Valley. Teammate Saleem Aziz (14 points) had four 3-pointers.

    Monte Vista tops Amador Valley

  • The Monte Vista High boys soccer team remained unbeaten in the typically balanced East Bay Athletic League with a 2-1 victory over Amador Valley on Jan. 5. Jeff Greenberg had a goal and an assist for the Mustangs, who improved to 2-0-2 in league. Kaave Bahadori scored for the Dons in the 23rd minute to tie it 1-1, off a Brandon Ruiz assist. Amador Valley goalkeeper Steven Morgan had six saves.

    Monte Vista routs Livermore

  • Three players scored in double figures as the Monte Vista High girls basketball team cruised past Livermore 65-34 on Jan. 4 to improve to 2-0 in the EBAL.

    Granada completes strong opening week

  • The Granada High boys basketball team drilled Foothill 73-55 on Jan. 4 to complete a 2-0 record on opening week of EBAL action. Sophomore Kameron Johnson and senior Collin Sommerhauser combined for 34 points for the Matadors. Sommerhauser also had 32 points in the Matadors' league-opening win over San Ramon Valley.

    Amador Valley throws scare into De La Salle

  • The Amador Valley High boys basketball team, which topped Livermore in its league opener, dropped a 45-43 heartbreaker against De La Salle on Jan. 4. Josh Slaton paced the balanced Dons with 10 points, and point guard Jeros Domagas added nine points.

    LPC men end skid

  • The Las Positas College men's basketball team ended a five-game losing streak with a 61-58 win over Monterey Peninsula 61-58 on Jan. 4 in the Hawks' nonconference finale. The Hawks (5-10) were led by B.T. Shabazz's 11 points. Jacob Contreras added nine points, and Justin Wolfe, Joseph Viscuglia and Steve Cazares each had eight. Las Positas opens Coast Conference North Division play Jan. 11 against visiting Foothill.

  • Amador Valley at Monte Vista, boys basketball, Jan. 4, 7 p.m. -- The Dons, who suffered a two-point loss last week against De La Salle, will face the Mustangs, who rebounded from a stunning league-opening loss against California with a win over Livermore.

  • Alysse Ketner, Amador Valley girls basketball -- Ketner had a game-high 28 points in a 70-57 loss to Carondelet in EBAL action Jan. 4.

  • Collin Sommerhauser, Granada boys basketball -- Sommerhauser scored 50 points combined in wins over San Ramon Valley and Foothill to open the league season.
