SACRAMENTO -- Tom Torlakson, state Superintendent of Schools, has named 424 elementary campuses as Distinguished Schools for student achievement and innovation.

The winners include two dozen schools in Contra Costa County from the Lafayette, Mt. Diablo, Orinda, San Ramon and Walnut Creek districts.

The statewide program recognizes schools for making progress in narrowing the achievement gap. Those earning the title agree to share their "signature practices" with other schools and to mentor others.

The state Department of Education recognizes elementary and middle schools in alternate years. A complete list of winning schools is available at www.cde.ca.gov. Click on "California Distinguished Schools for 2014."
