Dougherty Valley tennis a NorCal finalist

  • The Dougherty Valley boys tennis team, fresh off its NCS Division I title, advanced to the finals of the CIF Northern Regional championships May 24 at Gold River Racquet Club. The Wildcats, seeded second, beat Pleasant Valley-Chico 6-1 in the quarterfinals and Saratoga 5-2 in the semifinals before they lost 5-2 to defending champion and No. 1 seed Menlo School. Dougherty Valley finished the season with a 19-1 record, which also included a Diablo Foothill Athletic League championship and an NCS Division I singles title for Mayson Xue.

    San Ramon Valley loses to DLS in lacrosse

  • Captain Peter Tagliaferri scored two goals, but it wasn't enough for the San Ramon Valley boys lacrosse team in a 11-5 loss to De La Salle in the NCS Division I championship game on May 24. Tagliaferri scored the Wolves' only goal in the first half as they trailed 3-1 going into the third quarter. But that's when the Spartans took over, outscoring San Ramon Valley 5-1 to take a 8-2 lead going into the fourth quarter. Wolves midfielder Erik Arvesen added two goals, both assisted by midfielder Carter Nichols. San Ramon Valley, the East Bay Athletic League champions, finished the season with a 14-9 record. The Wolves had outscored opponents 43-9 in three playoff games before the final.

    Amador Valley cruises in NCS playoff opener

  • The Amador Valley High softball team had no problems advancing to the semifinals of the North Coast Section Division I playoffs. In an 11-0 win over No. 8-seeded Castro Valley on May 23, Dons pitcher Johanna Grauer threw a six-inning no-hitter and also went 2 for 4 with four RBIs. Teammate Ashley Lotozynski went 3 for 4, including a two-run homer in the sixth inning to end the game. She finished with four RBIs and added a stolen base for Amador Valley, which advanced to face rival and No. 5 seed Foothill in the semifinals on May 28, after this newspaper went to press.

    Foothill golf repeats as NorCal champions

  • The Foothill boys golf team had five players shoot 79 or better to finish with a team score of 380 -- two shots ahead Central Catholic-Modesto and four ahead of Dublin -- to captures its second CIF Northern California title in three years and its fourth overall on May 19 at Sierra View Country Club in Roseville. John Fracisco led the Falcons with a 1-over 73, followed by Tanner Hughes (75), Raj Chekuri (76), Ryan Knop (77) and Ryan Maund (79). Jacob Solomon led Dublin with a 71, good enough for a tie for third overall.

  • NCS Meet of Champions, track and field, May 30-31 -- The best track and field athletes from across the section will gather at Cal's Edwards Stadium for the NCS championships. The top three athletes in each event will automatically advance to compete in the CIF Championships next week in Clovis.

  • Nick Poirier, San Ramon Valley baseball -- Poirier, a junior infielder, went 3 for 5 with two RBIs to lead the Wolves past Monte Vista 10-5 in the NCS Division I quarterfinals on May 24.

  • Peter Tagliaferri, San Ramon Valley boys lacrosse -- Tagliaferri score two goals for the Wolves in their 11-5 loss to De La Salle in the NCS Division I championship game.

  • John Fracisco, Foothill boys golf -- Fracisco shot a 1-over 73 to lead the Falcons, who captured their second Northern California in three years.

  • Jasaiah Gholston, Foothill softball -- Gholston, a senior pitcher, had three strikeouts and gave up only one walk for the Falcons, who upset Heritage 3-1 in the NCS Division I quarterfinals.

  • Ashley Lotozynski, Amador Valley softball -- Lotozynski went 3 for 4, including a walk-off two-run homer in the sixth inning, to lead the Dons to an 11-0 win over Castro Valley. She finished with four RBIs and added a stolen base.
