Tri-Valley Around the Horn: Amador Valley captures NCS softball title

Amador Valley wins NCS Div. I softball title The Amador Valley High softball team beat East Bay Athletic League-rival Granada 2-1 on May 31 at Saint Mary's College to win the North Coast Section Division I championship, the Dons' second section title overall and the first since 2011. Catcher Victoria Molina was 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Dons (27-0), and winning pitcher Johanna Grauer struck out 11. Granada sophomore Jessica Johnston was the tough-luck loser, allowing no runs after giving up two in the first.

Local track stars head to state championships Granada sophomore Megan McCandless had impressive efforts in the girls 1,600 and 3,200 meters at the NCS Meet of Champions on May 31 at Cal's Edwards Stadium, qualifying for the state meet in both events. The California Interscholastic Federation championships are June 6-7 in Clovis. On Deck CIF State, track and field, June 6-7 -- The state's best track and field athletes will gather at Buchanan High in Clovis for the CIF championships.
Stars of the week Alex Barden, San Ramon Valley baseball -- Barden fired a two-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks as the Wolves beat Berkeley 4-0 in the NCS Division I semifinals on May 28. Lauren Larson, San Ramon Valley track and field -- Larson won the girls pole vault title at the NCS Meet of Champions with a mark of 11 feet, 8 inches. Brooke Starn, Monte Vista track and field -- Starn won the girls 1,600 meter title at the NCS Meet of Champions in a time of 4:53.69. Kayla Fitzgerald, Granada softball -- Fitzgerald had three hits of Matadors' 13 hits in an 11-1 romp over James Logan in six innings on May 27, as the Matadors earned their first trip to the NCS Division I finals since 2007. Megan McCandless, Granada track and field -- McCandless earned top three finishes in the girls 1,600 and 3,200 at the NCS Meet of Champions. Mecca McGlaston, Dublin track and field -- McGlaston won the 100 meter hurdles title in a fast 13.87 seconds at the NCS Meet of Champions, and placed third in the 200. Conner McKinnon, Amador Valley track and field -- McKinnon won the 800 meter title at the NCS Meet of Champions in a personal best time of 1 minute, 52.44 seconds, and also qualified for the state meet in the 1,600 relay, helping the Dons finish second. Tyler Olson, Livermore track and field -- Olson followed his victory in the NCS Tri-Valley meet with a win in the 1,600 meters at the NCS Meet of Champions in a time of 4:14.80. Brookey Villanueva, Amador Valley track and field -- Villanueva finished third in the 300 hurdles at the Meet of Champions in 44.73 to grab the final spot for the state meet in the event. Jake Wilgus, Foothill baseball -- Wilgus was the tough-luck loser in the Falcons' 1-0 defeat against De La Salle on May 28 in the NCS Division I semifinals. Wilgus allowed three hits and one earned run in the fifth inning.
