all nighter BUS ROUTE ending: The County Connection today is ending its All Nighter bus service that carried passengers between Central Contra Costa BART stations and downtown Oakland from midnight to 6 a.m. seven nights a week.

County Connection officials said the service, meant to provide public transit when BART was closed, failed to generate enough riders to justify the cost in its three years of operation. An average of two passengers per hour rode the night buses, which made stops at the BART stations in Concord, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, Lafayette and Orinda en route to downtown Oakland.

Earlier this month, the County Connection Board decided to raise bus fares and cut service in March for its regular bus service in Central Contra Costa County and the San Ramon Valley.

"To continue subsidizing the All Nighter service while increasing fares and eliminating more heavily utilized bus service is not the way the County Connection Board of Directors will use taxpayer funds," said Greg Manning, chairman of the County Connection Board.
