Miramonte speech program to host showcase

The Miramonte High School Public Speaking program, one of the top such programs in the country, will present its first public showcase next month.

The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 3 in the school's theater. Speech topics will range from social networking to the energy crisis to The Grinch.

Tickets are $5 and are available at the door or online at http://miramonte.revtrak.net/tek9.asp. Light refreshments will be provided after the performance.

Kindergarten registration starts Feb. 1 in Orinda

Kindergarten registration for Orinda's 2010-2011 school year, starting in August, will be held at each elementary school this year Monday through Thursday, Feb. 1-4, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.

To help determine which school your child should attend, check the OUSD Web site at www.orindaschools.org, under the "attendance areas" short cut on the left edge of the homepage, or call the district office 258-6211.

A child must be at least 5 years old on or before Dec. 2, 2010, to be eligible for enrollment in kindergarten. Documents will be needed to verify age eligibility, residency and required immunizations.

Registration time in Lafayette, too

Parents of children who will be in kindergarten during the 2010-11 school year can register their students this month.

Registration for children born on or before Dec. 5, 2005 will take place on Jan. 26 and 27 at the following locations and times

  • Burton Valley Elementary, 561 Merriewood Drive: 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.

  • Happy Valley Elementary, 3855 Happy Valley Road: 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.

  • Lafayette Elementary, 950 Moraga Road, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1-3 p.m.

  • Springhill Elementary, 3301 Springhill Road: 9-11 a.m.

    Registration packets can be picked up at the schools but cannot be turned in before registration day.

    It is not necessary to bring your child on registration day. Parents who cannot make the registration dates can register their child after these dates.

    Panel discussion on girls' middle school experience

    The Lamorinda chapter of the American Association of University Women is hosting a panel discussion on "The Truth About Girls' Middle School Experience."

    The event will feature a question-and-answer session with high school girls from all four Acalanes school district high schools who attended local middle schools and work with current middle school girls.

    Parents of middle school girls and others are welcome to attend this free event. The panel will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. Feb. 18 at Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School, 1010 Camino Pablo, Moraga. Refreshments will be served.
