Session on student safety planned: The John Swett Unified School District is sponsoring a free event on teen safety with the Contra Costa Sheriff's Office on Thursday.
The discussion will focus on teenage parties and alcohol use, sexting, domestic violence, legal information on sexual assault and criminal liability for minors.
The event is open to all teens and parents and will include an iPod raffle. It is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the John Swett High auditorium, 1098 Pomona St., Crockett. For more information, e-mail Deborah Brandon at Deborah.firstname.lastname@example.org.
Grants available from Sprint: The 2010 application period for the Sprint Character Education Grant Program is in progress. The funds go to school programs that encourage character education in K-12 students.
The grants are available to all public schools and school districts. Schools can apply for grants between $500 and $5,000, and school districts for $10,000 to $25,000.

College event planned: The Gooden Family Scholarship Fund and the West Contra Costa Unified School District are sponsoring the fifth annual "Get on the Road to College" event.
The program is for high school juniors and parents, and will pair participants with a professional college adviser for a private session.
The free event is scheduled for Feb. 6, with sessions at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. at Dejean Middle School, 3400 MacDonald Ave., Richmond. Reservations are required; call 510-526-1985.
EdFund scholarship application available: Students can apply for a variety of college scholarships from EdFund.
Applicants must be high school seniors graduating in spring 2010; have a minimum GPA of 2.5 in core curriculum subjects for all years of high school; show financial need; and have not received a UC Regents, Incentive Award, Gates Scholarship or any other scholarship of more than $3,500, or a "full ride."
