SAN JOSE — Sharks coach Todd McLellan didn't divulge any names but said Thursday he has established which of his goalies will start against the Los Angeles Kings in Game 1 of the playoffs.
"We know what we're doing, unless injury or something else comes into play," McLellan said. "But they both have to be polished and ready to go."
McLellan said both Antti Niemi and Alex Stalock will see action in the Sharks' final two regular season games. The Sharks host Colorado in their home finale on Friday and play at Phoenix on Saturday to close the regular season. McLellan said he's been told the series with the Kings will begin as "early as Wednesday or as late as Friday."
"We don't know what our schedule looks like yet, so we don't want to have one or the other sitting for a long time," McLellan said. "So they'll both play this weekend, see action, and they'll both be prepared to play in the playoffs."
The Sharks' second-place finish in the Pacific Division was sealed with a 5-2 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday. Niemi gave up three goals on 19 shots before he was pulled in the second period in favor of Stalock, who stopped nine of 10 shots. Anaheim's last goal was an empty-netter with 1:38 left in the third period.
After Wednesday's game, McLellan was non-committal when asked if Niemi was still "his guy" going into the playoffs, saying only the 2013 Vezina Trophy finalist was one "one of our guys."
McLellan said Thursday he has confidence in both goalies.
"We've got 49 wins in the bank right, and they've played a huge role in that," McLellan said. "So we feel good about our goaltenders. We feel good about going into the playoffs with them."
