SAN JOSE — Staying true to his word, Sharks coach Todd McLellan said he'll announce Thursday whether Antti Niemi or Alex Stalock will start in net for Game 1 of San Jose's opening-round playoff series against the Los Angeles Kings.
Although he has been inconsistent in recent weeks, Niemi, with his experience that includes a Stanley Cup championship in 2010 with Chicago, is expected to be the choice to start in goal. McLellan said the starting goalie does indeed know his status for Thursday's opener.
Niemi told reporters Tuesday he did not know if he was starting, and did not shed much light on the subject again on Wednesday.
Niemi went 3-2 over his past five games, getting pulled once in 5-2 loss to Anaheim on April 9 that marked his poorest performance during that stretch. But he also shined in a 2-1 victory over Los Angeles on April 3, stopping 26 of 27 shots.
"I remember they scored with the first shot on tip, then I don't think we gave them too much. They had a few chances at the end," Niemi said Wednesday, recalling that game where the Sharks shut out the Kings after Jordan Nolan scored for Los Angeles less than four minutes into the game.
