Coakley heads Mt. Diablo HOF inductees
The Mt. Diablo High School Hall of Fame will induct four new members and one team as the class of 2009 when it holds its annual induction ceremony on Nov. 7. Inductees in the 2009 class are longtime coach and athletic director Jerry Coakley, five-sport star Cheryl Conner, track and basketball standout Don Brooks, football and basketball player Tommy Kramer and the undefeated 1972 wrestling team. The ceremony is scheduled for Zio Fraedo's Continental Restaurant in Pleasant Hill. Cocktails begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:30. Mats continue to spike competition
The Miramonte High School girls volleyball team cruised to a 25-18, 25-14, 25-9 win over visiting Acalanes on Oct. 8 to improve to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in DFAL play. Juliana Stivanecivic recorded 16 kills and four blocks and Mary Diamantidis added eight kills and 18 assists in the win.— Ben Enos
Landrum picks up win
Diablo Valley College cross country runner Wyatt Landrum helped the Vikings bring home some hardware from their own meet, winning the individual title at the Viking Invitational at Newhall Park in Concord on Oct. 9. Landrum stopped the clock with a time of 23 minutes, 33 seconds and helped the Vikings finish second in the men's team standings.— Ben Enos
Cougars continue EBAL roll
The Carondelet High School tennis team improved to 6-1 in EBAL play with a 8-1 win over California at ClubSport Valley Vista on Oct. 9. Chloe Dobbert wrapped up a great week at No. 1 singles, winning her match 6-2, 6-2. Also scoring singles wins were Giovana Meza, Nicole Hohenstein, Juliana Joseph and Julie Cox.— Ben Enos

Alhambra at Acalanes, football, Oct. 16, 7 p.m. — The two remaining unbeatens in DFAL play meet in Lafayette to decide an early-season league leader. Both teams feature punishing running backs, with Alhambra turning to Richard Calhoun and Acalanes calling on Bo McSwine and Tyler Malley. Western States Tournament, girls water polo, Oct. 16-17, all day — Acalanes and Campolindo will be among the 80 teams competing at one of the largest girls water polo tournaments in the state. Northgate at Ygnacio Valley, football, Oct. 17, 1 p.m. — The Broncos and Warriors kick off the DVAL season with an afternoon showdown in Concord. Berean Christian at Northgate, girls volleyball, Oct. 20, 6:30 p.m. — A cross-town rivalry has evolved into a battle for DVAL supremacy when the Broncos host the Eagles.Stars of the week
Carolyn Esserman, Miramonte girls tennis — Playing at both No. 3 and No. 1 singles, Esserman picked up wins over Monte Vista, Las Lomas and Alhambra in a perfect week of tennis. With the wins, Esserman moved her record to 16-1 on the season. Nick Hoversten, Acalanes boys water polo — Hoversten scored a total of 16 goals in four games at the S&R Tournament in Irvine on Oct. 9-10.
