Stanford senior center Jayne Appel was named to the Associated Press preseason All-America team.

Also, Connecticut's Maya Moore became the seventh unanimous choice on the women's basketball team.

Appel and Moore, last season's AP Player of the Year, were joined on the squad by UConn's Tina Charles, Ohio State's Jantel Lavender and Virginia's Monica Wright.

"It's a thrill to be an All-American," Appel (Carondelet High) said Tuesday.

  • Freshman DeNesha Stallworth (Pinole Valley High) had 21 points and nine rebounds, leading Cal to a 101-81 exhibition win over visiting Vanguard.

  • Minnesota star recruit Royce White faces misdemeanor charges for shoplifting. Coach Tubby Smith suspended White and senior Devron Bostick indefinitely for breaking team rules. Trevor Mbakwe also is out while his felony charge goes through the legal process.

    College football

    Oregon coach Chip Kelly hasn't decided whether he'll recommend that running back LeGarrette Blount, suspended for punching a Boise State player in the opener, be reinstated for Saturday's game against Stanford. Also, Cardinal defensive end Erik Lorig (groin injury) hasn't been cleared to play.

  • USC tailbacks Joe McKnight (ankle) and Allen Bradford (knee) sat out most of practice, but they both hope to play at Arizona State on Saturday.

    Notre Dame star wide receiver Michael Floyd will play against Navy on Saturday, six weeks after breaking his collarbone.

  • Georgia running back Washaun Ealey, the victim of Brandon Spikes' eye gouging Saturday, doesn't believe the Florida linebacker should have been suspended. Coach Urban Meyer on Monday suspended Spikes for the first half of this week's game against Vanderbilt.

  • Florida State defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews is retiring at the end of the season after 47 years coaching, including 26 years with the Seminoles.

    College softball

    Police say three missing Dickinson State (N.D.) players were found dead in a vehicle that was pulled from a pond. Police said they believe Kyrstin Gemar, Afton Williamson and Ashley Neufeld were in a Jeep Cherokee when they made two desperate calls to friends for help. Tire tracks were found leading into the pond.

    Tennis

    Novak Djokovic beat Andreas Beck 6-3, 7-5 in the first round at the Swiss Indoors in Basel, his ATP Tour-leading 67th win of the year.

    Baseball

    Washington hired former Chicago White Sox general manager Ron Schueler as special adviser to GM Mike Rizzo. Schueler worked for the Giants as an adviser the past two seasons. He also had been in the front office and a pitching coach for the A's.

  • Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Vicente Padilla was accidentally shot in the right leg at a shooting range in Managua, Nicaragua. Differing reports have him shooting himself or being shot by his bodyguard. He was treated at a hospital and released.

  • Tampa Bay traded infielder Akinori Iwamura to Pittsburgh for pitcher Jesse Chavez. The Rays held a $4.85 million option on Iwamura for next season.

  • Toronto outfielder Vernon Wells will have surgery next week to repair damaged cartilage in his left wrist.

    Golf

    The AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-am will be held Feb. 11-14, 2010. Also, the PGA Tour slotted the Reno-Tahoe for July 15-18 at the Montreux course, the same weekend as the American Celebrity Championship at Lake Tahoe. The British Open is also scheduled then.

  • Stephanie Sendell opened with a 70 and had a one-shot lead over Livermore teenager Casie Cathrea at the California Women's Amateur at The Golf Course at Quail Lodge. The tournament becomes to match play after today's round.

    Horse racing

    Zenyatta is the early 5-2 favorite for the Breeders' Cup Classic. The unbeaten filly, with Mike Smith up, will break from the No. 4 post Saturday at Santa Anita. Also in the 11/4-mile Classic are Summer Bird and Mine That Bird. Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer will start two horses — Blind Luck in the Juvenile Fillies on Friday and Chocolate Candy in the Dirt Mile on Saturday.
