Raiders coach Tom Cable finally received a bit of good news Sunday after a season's worth of bad news regarding his personal and off-field exploits.

On Sunday, ESPN reported that the NFL isn't inclined to discipline Cable for the recent allegations of physical abuse levied against him by his first wife and a former girlfriend.

Cable still faces the prospect of a clinical evaluation by independent doctors as to whether he needs counseling for anger-management issues.

The league also is considering whether to discipline Cable for his alleged attack of defensive assistant Randy Hanson during a training-camp incident in which Hanson wound up with a broken jaw.

No charges have been filed against Cable in any of the alleged incidents. He admitted only to slapping his first wife, Sandy Cable, more than 20 years ago.

ESPN aired a story Nov. 1 that featured Sandy Cable and former girlfriend Marie Lutz detailing how Cable physically abused them during their relationships with Cable.

The report also disclosed a divorce document from Cable's second wife, Glenda, that showed an allegation by her that Cable physically abused her, as well. Glenda Cable later issued a statement that recanted her original account.

In light of the initial ESPN report, the Raiders issued a statement saying that they don't condone the behavior alleged and that they would undertake a serious evaluation of the matter. There hasn't been any word of their

  • The long-awaited 2009 debut of wide receiver Chaz Schilens finally came about Sunday, as Schilens started the game after sitting out the first eight while recovering from a broken bone in his left foot.

    Quarterback JaMarcus Russell wasted no time in getting Schilens into the flow by completing a pass to him for 6 yards on the first play from scrimmage. Schilens finished with three receptions for 27 yards.

    "It felt good," Schilens said of getting some action. "It was good to get it out of the way. I wish we could have done more. First game back, came through it healthy, look at it positive going into next week."

  • The Chiefs entered Sunday's game without a rushing touchdown on 218 attempts. Every other team had at least one rushing touchdown before Sunday.

    They broke the drought in dramatic fashion, with Jamaal Charles bolting 44 yards for a touchdown on a fourth-and-one play early in the second quarter to tie the game at 10.

  • The Raiders were tied with the Cleveland Browns for 30th in scoring at 9.8 points per game before Sunday. The St. Louis Rams were last at a 9.6 average. The Raiders surpassed their average by halftime but failed to add any more points. The Rams scored 23 against the New Orleans Saints and leapfrogged the Raiders and Browns.

  • Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski converted a 50-yard field goal late in the first quarter that kept intact his streak of made field goals. However, his string of 13 field-goal attempts made this season and 20 straight dating back to Nov. 16 ended with a miss from 46 yards midway through the third quarter.

  • Defensive end Greg Ellis (knee, shoulder) and receiver Javon Walker (hamstring) were among the players deactivated by the Raiders for Sunday's game.

  • The Raiders and Chiefs failed to convert a third-down play in the first half despite 18 attempts. Each team went 0-for-9. The Chiefs broke through on their first attempt in the second half. The Raiders finally converted one on their first attempt in the fourth quarter.

    "You can point to that directly," Cable said as to why the Raiders offense stalled after a game-opening touchdown.

  • The Raiders committed seven penalties for 59 yards in the first half and 10 for 88 overall.

    "If there's one thing disappointing about the game, too many penalties for the first time this season," Cable said.

  • The Chiefs defeated the Raiders at the Coliseum for the seventh straight season.
