Teresa Noyola's goal off a free kick with 6:19 left in the first half held up as the game's only goal, and host No. 1 Stanford beat No. 11 Santa Clara 1-0 in the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament on Friday.

The top-seeded Cardinal (23-0) advanced to the quarterfinals, where it will host second-seeded Boston College (18-3-2) next Friday. The Eagles eliminated Wisconsin 1-0 in another Round of 16 match.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals were fellow No. 1 seeds UCLA and Florida State. North Carolina, the fourth No. 1 seed in the tournament, plays at home against Maryland today.

Jordan Angeli almost tied the game for Santa Clara (14-8-2) in the final three minutes, but Stanford goalkeeper Kira Maker made a leaping save off Angeli's shot to the upper right corner.

No. 6 Boise State 52, Utah State 21: Doug Martin ran for 121 yards and four touchdowns, Jeremy Avery added 116 rushing yards and two touchdowns, and the visiting Broncos (11-0, 6-0 Western Athletic Conference) stayed in BCS contention.

    Onuaku combined for 13 points in the Orange's 22-1 run to start the second half, and Syracuse rolled to the championship of the Coaches vs. Cancer tournament at Madison Square Garden. Tournament MVP Wesley Johnson had 25 points for the Orange (4-0).

    No. 2 Michigan State 75, Toledo 62: The host Spartans' win was Tom Izzo's 339th as coach, one shy of mentor Jud Heathcoate's school record.

    No. 14 Washington 80, San Jose State 70: Adrian Oliver scored 32 points for the visiting Spartans (1-1), who trailed by only four points early in the second half before the Huskies (4-0) pulled away.

    Arizona State 104, San Francisco 65: Rihards Kuksiks had career highs with 27 points, seven 3-point baskets for the host Sun Devils (4-0). Kwame Vaughn led the Dons (2-1) with 17 points.

    Women's basketball

    Saint Mary's 65, Nevada 62: Center Louella Thompson scored 12 of her game-high 18 points in the second half as the host Gaels (2-1) broke open a tight game late at McKeon Pavilion. Thompson added 12 rebounds and 10 blocked shots, and Ashlee Smith scored 12 and Kate Gaze 10 for Saint Mary's.

    No. 11 Cal d. Arizona State: Hana Cutura had 19 kills and 19 digs, and the visiting Bears (18-8, 11-5 Pac-10) posted a 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 29-27 victory over the Sun Devils (13-14, 3-12).

    No. 6 Stanford d. Arizona: Alex Klineman had 23 kills, 10 digs and two blocks, and the visiting Cardinal (19-7, 12-4 Pac-10) posted a 25-18, 24-26, 21-25, 25-21, 15-7 win over the Wildcats (18-8, 7-8). Gabi Ailes' 26 digs left her one shy of equaling Stanford's single-season mark of 533.

    Baseball

    Arizona State coach Pat Murphy, who led the Sun Devils to the College World Series in 1998, 2005, '07 and '09, has resigned after 15 seasons.
