Art Savage, the majority owner of the Sacramento River Cats, the A's Triple-A affiliate, has died. He was 58. Jeff Savage said his father collapsed at his Sacramento home Saturday and died on the way to the hospital. He says his father had recently recovered from a long battle with lung cancer. Jeff Savage said the family will retain control of the team. Art Savage also was a president and CEO of the NHL's Sharks from 1990-96.
Women's soccer
Senior Casey Nogueira scored in the 82nd minute and top-seeded North Carolina posted its eighth straight shutout in a 1-0 victory in the third round of the NCAA Women's Tournament. All four No. 1 seeds (Stanford, UCLA, Florida State are the others) have advanced to the Elite Eight.
Men's water polo
Host No. 3 Stanford (20-2, 7-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) beat No. 2 Cal 8-6 in the annual Big Splash, ending the Bears' nine-match winning streak. Eight players scored for the Cardinal. Spencer Warden had two goals for Cal (20-5, 6-2).

The season-ending LPGA Tour Championship in Richmond, Texas, will be cut to 54 holes after rain washed out play for the second straight day. Lorena Ochoa maintains the lead after her first-round 66.
