Your best entertainment value on the first night of prep football playoffs in the East Bay on Friday was probably in Oakley.

That's where host Freedom High capped used a furious comeback by blocking a last-second, game-winning field goal attempt by California for a 29-28 victory in North Coast Section Division I playoffs action.

The 10-1 Falcons' prize is a quarterfinal matchup at the East Bay's top-ranked team, De La Salle, next Friday night.

Meanwhile, San Ramon Valley rolled in the other Division I game Friday. Zach Kline passed for 296 yards and accounted for five touchdowns as the Wolves (8-3) beat Castro Valley 42-14.

The No. 7 seeded Wolves will play at No. 2 James Logan (10-0) on Friday in the quarterfinals.

However, the Wolves played the game with heavy hearts after learning that 2010 San Ramon Valley graduate Joshua Corral, a Marine from Danville, had been killed in combat in Afghanistan, according to San Ramon Valley coach Mark Kessler.

"It puts everything into proper perspective," Kessler said.

Here's a quick look at some of the other NCS games played Friday:

  • In Division II, No. 2-seeded Las Lomas got a big night from Robby Ow and beat No. 15 Washington 27-6 and will play the winner of Saturday's game between No. 7 Concord and No. 10 Newark Memorial in next weekend's quarterfinals.

  • In another Division II game, Daivon Ballard of College Park (7-4) rushed for 265 yards and scored three touchdowns as the No. 4-seeded Falcons beat American 49-34.

  • Unbeaten Campolindo (11-0) opened Division III postseason play in style as quarterback Brett Stephens went 12-for-17 for 263 yards and three touchdowns in the first half of a 58-21 win over Hercules.

Campo will next host Bishop O'Dowd, a 41-0 winner over Del Norte, in second-round play on Nov. 26.

  • El Cerrito lost a heartbreaker in Division II action as Eureka's Jose Manzo scored on a two-point conversion with 1:35 left to propel the Loggers to a 29-28 win over the Gauchos.
