SAN JOSE -- The Earthquakes plan to play winter games in Tucson, Ariz., Oxnard and Portland, Ore., as part of the 2013 preseason schedule, the team announced Wednesday.

Training camp opens Jan. 19 with a majority of the 2012 players who won the Supporters' Shield expected to return. The Quakes have scheduled five games, but none located in the Bay Area. The club also has scheduled about two weeks of training at its San Jose practice field.

The Earthquakes are scheduled to play in the Portland Preseason Tournament in February against the Timbers, AIK of Sweden and FC Dallas.

  • San Jose defender Victor Bernardez finished second to Argentine Federico Higuain of the Columbus Crew for Major League Soccer's newcomer of the year award. Bernardez won the club and player vote but was only third in the media ballot behind Higuain and Seattle Sounders Michael Gspurning. ...Sporting Kansas City's Jimmy Nielsen was the runaway winner for goalkeeper of the year.
