ORINDA -- Playing in its first game since the sudden death of Brandon Huang, the host Miramonte High boys basketball team raced out to a 15-point lead at halftime and went on to a 89-80 Diablo Foothill Athletic League win over Dublin on Tuesday.

Huang, 20, who graduated from Miramonte in 2010 and played on the varsity basketball team as a senior, died Sunday in San Luis Obispo. He was a sophomore at Cal Poly. A cause of death has not been determined.

A moment of silence was observed before Tuesday's game. A candlelight vigil was scheduled for Wednesday at Cal Poly for Huang, according to reports.

"The kids definitely represented themselves well," Matadors coach Drew McDonald said. "One of the first things that was said once we got back to the locker room was, 'Brandon would be proud.'"

Kiran Shastri led Miramonte (16-10, 8-4 DFAL) with 31 points and 11 rebounds. JoJo McGlaston had 24 points and 10 rebounds for Dublin (20-6, 11-1), which clinched the league title last week.

Miramonte, which has now won five straight, outscored Dublin 24-16 in the second quarter to take a 51-36 lead at the break.

Drew Anderson finished with 15 points and six rebounds for the Matadors, and teammate Jackson Wegener added 17 points.

"It was our best 32 minutes of basketball of the season," McDonald said.
