The Earthquakes rallied to gain a 3-3 tie against the host Portland Timbers in a preseason tournament game Sunday night in front of 14,229 fans at Jeld-Wen Field.
Former San Jose striker Ryan Johnson scored a hat trick in his Timbers' home debut, burning the Quakes' defense from the air and on the ground. But the Earthquakes countered with goals by Chris Wondolowski, Victor Bernardez and newly signed Mike Fucito.
San Jose got on the scoreboard first, finding the net in the third minute. The Timbers were whistled for a handball in the box, allowing Wondolowski to slot home a penalty for a 1-0 lead.
Portland didn't wait long to find an equalizer. Khalif Alhassan lobbed a cross from the end line that picked out Johnson in the fifth minute. Johnson got his head to the ball and flicked a shot to the far post. Johnson scored again 22 minutes later, poking a shot past Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch after Diego Valeri slotted a pass past the San Jose back line.
Bernardez tied it toward the end of the first half. Shea Salinas whipped a free kick into the area from 45 yards out, and Bernardez rose to win the header, nodding the ball past Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts in the 39th minute.
The final Earthquakes goal came in the 59th minute on a nicely played ball by English midfielder John Bostock in his San Jose debut. The Tottenham Hotspur product drew two defenders before firing on target, allowing Fucito -- a former Timbers forward
The strike offset Johnson's final goal six minutes earlier. Valeri delivered a through ball to Johnson as he broke past the defense. He chipped a shot over Busch, who came out of the box to challenge Johnson.
The Earthquakes will face AIK of Sweden at 5 p.m. Wednesday and FC Dallas on Saturday before returning to San Jose to prepare for the March 3 Major League Soccer season opener.
