Bill Powers has been hired as Acalanes High's new boys basketball coach, Acalanes principal Aida Glimme has confirmed.

Powers was the head coach for the Monte Vista boys varsity team for 14 years, winning two North Coast Section Division I titles and three East Bay Athletic League championships before stepping down in the spring of 2012 to accept a job as an assistant men's basketball coach at Diablo Valley College.

However, he said Monday that family concerns made the time commitment too much last summer. He said that he helped with the Monte Vista freshman team last season.

Powers said that a love for high school coaching prompted his return to the head coaching ranks.

"Being out for a year, it became obvious to me that there was something missing," said Powers, who will continue to teach at Monte Vista. "(Acalanes) has such a rich tradition both academically and athletically, it just seemed like a perfect fit for me."

When asked why the position was open, Glimme said that she can't disclose personnel information. Darrell Hirashima Jr., who was the Dons' head coach for the past five seasons, said he was brought in for a meeting with Glimme on March 28, when she told him she was opening the job to applicants.

"I was disappointed," said Hirashima Jr., who is an off-campus coach. "There's no hard feelings."

Hirashima Jr. had an overall record of 71-65 and a Diablo Foothill Athletic League record of 28-30 in his five seasons as the Dons' coach.
