CARMEL -- De La Salle High freshman Josh McCarthy shot a 2-under 69 and finished tied for third at the California Interscholastic Federation Golf Championships on Wednesday at Quail Lodge and Golf Club.

Jack Chung of Sunny Hills-Fullerton was the individual champion with a 5-under 66 on the 6,449-yard course, and Stevenson School-Pebble Beach won the team title with a five-player score of 368.

Northern California champion De La Salle was fifth, nine strokes back, in the close team race.

De La Salle's No. 1 player, Justin Pagila, the NorCal and North Coast Section Tournament of Champions runner-up, tied for 28th with a 76. Pagila shot a 3-under 32 on the front nine and was 3-under through 14 holes. But he had a 44 on the back nine, including a quadruple-bogey nine on No. 15.

McCarthy, who had five birdies, and Corey Pereira of Ponderosa finished a stroke behind runner-up Miguel Delgado of Branson School-Ross.

NorCal tournament medalist Ryan Maund of Foothill and De La Salle's Ben Chambers, listed as the Spartans' sixth man, both shot 75 and tied for 23rd. De La Salle's Jason Hurtz (77) Justin Nuval (80) rounded out the team's top five.

Chambers came up big for the third straight tournament. He was second-best on the squad with a 75 at NorCal to help the Spartans win their second title in three years. He also carded a 73 at NCS, when De La Salle finished second
