MORAGA -- Saint Mary's College has named Eric Valenzuela its new baseball coach, the school announced Wednesday. He comes to the Gaels after spending the last four seasons as Tony Gwynn's pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at San Diego State.
Valenzuela, 35, began his coaching career at SMC, where he was an assistant during the 2002-03 seasons. From there he went to the University of San Diego before joining Gwynn at San Diego State.
A graduate of Pepperdine, two of Valenzuela's proteges are A's right-hander A.J. Griffin and Baltimore Orioles' lefty Brian Matusz.
