San Jose State could be without a key defensive starter for the entire football season.
Vince Buhagiar hasn't practiced in a few weeks because of a shoulder injury. Coach Ron Caragher said Wednesday that the team hasn't ruled out having the senior linebacker redshirt this season.
"I'm not ready to say anything on that yet, but we could be moving in that direction," Caragher said.
Buhagiar was a first-team All-WAC selection last season. He had 89 tackles and three sacks at inside linebacker. The plan this season was to shift him to outside linebacker in SJSU's new 3-4 alignment.
Buhagiar, who attended Clayton Valley High, has been a starter since his true freshman season in 2010. Freedom High running back Joe Mixon announced via Twitter that he's canceling his official visit to Texas A&M and taking an official visit to Cal for the Bears' home game against No. 2 Ohio State. "The Game I'll be taking an Official is The Ohio St Game! September 14th #GoBears," Mixon tweeted. Mixon, who holds more than 50 scholarship offers, said earlier this month that Cal was among his list of top 10 schools. Cal senior point guard Justin Cobbs had surgery to repair a broken foot that he sustained in a San Francisco summer pro-am game nine days earlier, the school announced. Cobbs had a screw inserted to stabilize a fracture in his fifth metatarsal bone. His recovery timetable is six to eight weeks, according to Cal basketball coach Mike Montgomery. The Bears open Nov. 8 against Coppin State. Theo Robertson, MVP of Cal's 2009-10 Pac-10 championship team, was named director of basketball operations for the program. The former De La Salle High star served as graduate manager of the team last year. Mitch Elkins was named assistant director of basketball operations. Scott Reiss, a reporter and anchor at Comcast SportsNet Bay Area and a 1993 graduate of Stanford, was named the radio voice for the Cardinal football and men's basketball teams.
The United States beat New Zealand 12-5 to finish the preliminary round unbeaten at the World Junior Water Polo Championships in Volos, Greece. Cal's Tiera Schroeder plays for the U.S. Natalie Fletcher and Dana Drury of the Walnut Creek Aquanuts won the 13-15 duet, and Santa Clara Aquamaids Chesnie Cheung and Kaitlyn Hoang won the 12-and-under duet at the Pan American Championships in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
