San Jose State could be without a key defensive starter for the entire season.
Vince Buhagiar hasn't practiced for a couple weeks because of a shoulder injury. Coach Ron Caragher said Wednesday that the team hasn't ruled out having the senior linebacker redshirt this season. "I'm not ready to say anything on that yet, but we could be moving in that direction," Caragher said.
Buhagiar was a first-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection last season. He was second on the team with 89 tackles and had three sacks while starting every game at inside linebacker.
The plan was to shift him to outside linebacker this season in SJSU's new 3-4 alignment. He began playing that position midway through spring camp.
San Jose Giants
Ricky Oropesa hit a two-run single in the top of the 10th inning to give the Giants their first lead of the game, and Jeff Arnold added a three-run homer as San Jose defeated the host Stockton Ports 16-11.
The Giants scored five runs in the eighth inning, then tied the score in the ninth on three consecutive two-out singles.
Mac Williamson, Devin Harris, Eric Sim and Myles Schroder each had three hits for the Giants. Schroder had four RBIs, and Williamson hit his 22nd homer and drove in three runs.
Derek Law earned the win with two perfect innings of relief. He struck out the side in the ninth.
Natalie Fletcher and Dana Drury of the Walnut Creek Aquanuts won the 13-15 duet while Santa Clara Aquamaids Chesnie Cheung and Kaitlyn Hoang won the 12-and-under duet at the Pan American Synchronized Swimming Championships in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Santa Clara's Rebecca Moody and Karensa Tjoa won silver in the junior duet.
