The A's Brett Anderson had a rocky outing in his rehab assignment for the Single-A Stockton Ports on Thursday night.

The left-hander allowed five runs (all earned) and five hits in just 31/3 innings as the host Ports were routed by the San Jose Giants 8-1 in Cal League play.

Anderson allowed solo homers to Jeff Arnold and Myles Schroder in the fourth inning. It was Arnold's 13th of the season and Schroder's fifth.

San Jose's Devin Harris added his 22nd homer of the year in the seventh.

Giants starter Ty Blach (12-3) pitched seven shutout innings to lower his ERA to 2.79. He allowed four hits and struck out six.

Anderson has now given seven runs and eight hits over 52/3 innings in two rehab outings.

Soccer

Cal alum Alex Morgan and former Stanford stars Nicole Barnhart and Rachel Buehler were among the 18 U.S. women's players selected to face Mexico in an exhibition match Sept. 3 at RFK Stadium in Washington.

Morgan injured her left knee Aug. 7 while playing for Portland of the National Women's Soccer League.

"At this point, the most important thing is that she is completely fit and healthy," coach Tom Sermanni said in a statement. "If our medical staff says she's ready to play, then she'll play."

Sermanni decided against calling in the U.S. European-based players such as former Cardinal great Christen Press, who plays in Sweden.

The Bulls play at the Cow Palace, and season tickets are on sale (call 855-SF-BULLS).
