Steve Birnbaum played in one game -- and just 15 minutes -- last season, but the defender returned as a fifth-year senior and capped Cal's season-opening, 2-0 upset of No. 3 Georgetown (0-1) in men's soccer Friday in Berkeley.

Connor Hallisey blasted in a shot from 25 yards at 40:12 of the first half to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

At 47:31, Stefano Bonomo dribbled into the Hoyas box before a defender clattered into him to set up a penalty kick. Birnbaum -- one of three Cal co-captains -- stepped to the spot and buried the ball in the back of the net.

Justin Taillole made three saves for Cal, which hosts No. 2 Maryland on Sunday. Maryland and host Stanford played to a 3-3 overtime draw.

  • Carlo Eikani and Will Kendall scored second-half goals, and the Saint Mary's men's soccer team (1-0) rallied to a 3-1 win over visiting Air Force (0-1).

  • Senior Genesse Daughetee and sophomore Samantha Witteman scored their first career goals, helping No. 18 Cal (2-0-1) to a 2-1 women's soccer victory over visiting Detroit (0-2-1).

  • The Saint Mary's women's soccer team (1-2) out-shot No. 25 Denver 11-5, but the Pioneers (3-0) came away with the 2-0 home win. Kaeli Schmidt had three saves in goal for the Gaels.

  • San Jose State women's basketball coach Tim La Kose resigned for personal reasons, the school announced. The Spartans posted identical 11-19 records the past two seasons. Athletic director Gene Bleymaier will begin a search for a replacement as SJSU readies for its debut season in the Mountain West Conference.

    The Spartans open the season Oct. 29 against William Jessup. Practice is set to begin in about three weeks. Assistants Mandi Carver, Brannon Hays and Cecilia Russell-Nava are expected to remain with the team, the athletic department confirmed.

  • Senior Carly Wopat, a Santa Barbara native, led the third-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team over host UC Santa Barbara 25-17, 25-23, 25-19 in the season opener for both teams. Wopat had 13 kills, eight blocks and two digs. "It was fun to have a lot of family and friends in the stands," Wopat said.

  • Adrienne Gehan had 16 kills, leading the Cal women's volleyball team (1-0) to a 25-11, 25-12, 25-20 win over Nevada (0-2) at the Cal Molten Classic.

  • Jordan Shaw had 14 kills and Kristina Graven added 12 kills, leading the Saint Mary's women's volleyball team (1-0) to a 25-17, 25-16, 22-25, 25-19 win over host Colorado (0-1).

  • Instant replay is coming to the 2014 WCC baseball tournament after the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved the conference's request to use experimental replay rules already in use at the College World Series.

    Golf

    Stanford's Lauren Kim edged Tiffany Lim of San Jose on the 37th hole to win the California Women's State Amateur at Quail Lodge in Carmel.

    Lim led 1-up after the first 18. After a short break, Lim jumped out to a 4-up lead after 24 holes. Kim rallied to tie it after 35 holes. After bogeys on the 36th hole, Kim saved par on the first extra hole for the title.
