If the first match of the season is any indication, the No. 3 position in the Bay Area News Group's East Bay rankings fits the Monte Vista High girls volleyball team.
The Mustangs traveled to Las Lomas and took care of business against the 11th-ranked Knights on Thursday with a 25-13, 25-9, 25-18 win, looking sharp in preparation for the Deer Valley Tournament on Saturday.
"I like this team a lot," Monte Vista coach JJ Utchen said. "They have a great work ethic, and they support each other."
The Mustangs (1-0) displayed a well-rounded attack that saw Rachel Underwood, Hailey Lindberg and Lo Utchen combine for 22 kills.
Jessy Ober contributed 18 assists after playing in just the first two games.
Las Lomas (0-1) trailed throughout, leading only once at 1-0 in the third game. Despite 12 kills from Lauren Fitterer, the Knights just couldn't get untracked against a team that many expect to compete for the East Bay Athletic League and North Coast Section Division I titles.
Monte Vista 199, Carondelet 205: The Mustangs had all five scorers shoot rounds of 6 over or better at Round Hill Country Club in an EBAL win over the Cougars.
Hailey White shot an even-par 36 to lead Monte Vista (4-0 EBAL). Teammate Angela Zhang added a 39.
Sabby Virtusio shot a 36, including birdies on Nos. 4-7, to pace Carondelet (3-1 EBAL).
