CROCKETT -- The host John Swett High football team held off a late fourth quarter rally by Emery to earn a 22-18 nonleague victory on Friday night.

James Sykes and Deondre Hendricks came up huge for the Indians' defense, combining for three interceptions and knocking down five passes. Eric Martin also had a big game for John Swett (1-1), recovering a Spartan fumble and returning it 85 yards for a touchdown.

Down 22-6 in the fourth quarter, Emery quarterback Nate Walker connected with tight end Emeree Robinson on a 14 yard touchdown pass. Walker also had an interception in the third quarter for the Spartans.

On its next possession, Emery (1-1) marched to the 13 yard line, but were denied when Alonzo Goodwin fumbled and John Swett recovered.

The Spartans scored again with 42 seconds left in the game pulling within four points, 22-18, but it was too little too late.

Indians' quarterback Matt Thompkins showed off his arm, throwing for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Hendricks was a favorite target for Thompkins with four receptions for 138 yards.
