SAN JOSE -- San Jose State has hired Sacramento State coach Jamie Craighead as its new women's basketball coach, the school announced Monday. Craighead replaces Tim La Kose, who resigned for personal reasons on Aug. 30.
"I appreciate the opportunity that Gene Bleymaier and Marie Tuite have given me," Craighead said in a statement, referencing SJSU's athletic director and deputy A.D. "After hearing about their vision for the women's basketball program at San Jose State, I am really excited to take on the challenge of this opportunity."
Craighead takes over the team just two weeks before the Spartans begin practice in preparation for their first season in the Mountain West Conference.
"I enjoy living and working in Northern California and have good recruiting ties in the area," Craighead said. "I cannot wait for the challenge of competing in the Mountain West, a league for which I have tremendous respect."
Craighead, 33, spent the past four seasons at Sacramento State. When she was hired in 2009, she was the youngest head coach in Division I. The Hornets matched a school record with 19 wins last season and reached the Big Sky Conference semifinals.
"She will be a tremendous asset to our basketball program, the University and to our community," Bleymaier said in a release.
The Spartans went 11-19 each of the past two seasons under La Kose, a respectable performance after winning just 13 games the previous four years combined.
Craighead will attempt to bring an up-tempo offense and full-court pressure defense to SJSU. Sacramento State led the Big Sky in scoring, 3-pointers, assists, steals and blocks last season.
Craighead played at Oregon and was part of the Ducks' NIT championship team her senior year in 2002. Oregon reached the NCAA tournament her first three seasons with the Ducks. She left the school ranking second all-time in 3-pointers.
Before joining the staff at Sacramento State as an assistant in 2007, the native of Elma, Wash., spent time as an assistant at Portland State and Division II Seattle Pacific.
