Matt Cochran, Cal's starting right offensive guard, will undergo surgery Thursday to repair a high ankle sprain and is expected to be sidelined for at least a month.

"They're going to fuse the bone back together," Cal coach Sonny Dykes said.

Dykes said Alejandro Crossthwaite and Bill Tyndall will be among those competing for the spot while Cochran, a redshirt freshman, recovers.

  • Bryce Treggs was one of nine receivers added to the watch list for the 2013 Biletnikoff Award by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, Inc., the creator and sponsor of the award presented annually to college football's outstanding receiver. Treggs joins teammate Chris Harper, who was announced on the preseason watch list in July.

  • San Jose State's Cody Blick won the Wolverine Intercollegiate in Ann Arbor, Mich., Tuesday to earn his second golf tournament title of the year. Blick, a sophomore from Danville, shot a 54-hole total of 203 (-10), placing three strokes ahead of Michigan's Chris O'Neill. As a team, the Spartans finished seventh, 19 shots behind champion Michigan State's 851 (-1).

  • The Saint Mary's men's golf team registered its best round of the season (1-under 287) to finish in a tie for fifth at the Husky Invitational at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.
