Starting cornerback Barry Browning was ruled out of fifth-ranked Stanford's Pac-12 opener against Arizona State on Saturday, coach David Shaw said Wednesday.

Browning is suffering from multiple injuries.

Also, the availability of starting fullback Ryan Hewitt won't be determined until Thursday.

"I'm not ready to rule him out just yet," Shaw told reporters. Hewitt (bruised knee) didn't play last weekend against Army.

  • Cal linebacker Nick Forbes, sidelined for more than a month with a lower back injury, believes he'll be ready to play soon. He wouldn't predict he'll start at No. 2 Oregon on Sept. 28 but said, "I am preparing as if I am that guy."

  • Jamie Craighead had to make a tough decision but is excited about taking over as women's basketball coach at San Jose State. She left Sacramento State on Monday for the SJSU vacancy created by the resignation of Tim La Kose. Her hiring comes less than two weeks before the start of practice. "Obviously it was really difficult," Craighead said of leaving Sac State. "You invest in your players' lives if you're good at what you do. ... But there are times when you have to make decisions and put yourself forward." Craighead wouldn't say if any current SJSU assistant is expected to stay on or if any of her Hornets staff would join her in San Jose.

  • Not quite a month after undergoing surgery for a broken right foot, Cal point guard Justin Cobbs said he's running on a treadmill with no pain. "Everything's feeling good," he said. Practice starts Sept. 27, and Cobbs wouldn't speculate on how extensively he'll be able to participate at first. Cal's season opens Nov. 8 against Coppin State. Cobbs, who averaged 15.1 points a game last season, was injured during a San Francisco Summer Pro-Am League game Aug. 12.
