The Cal men's soccer team is ranked No. 1 in two prestigious polls for the first time in school history after sweeping Colgate and College of Charleston last weekend.

The Bears (5-0-1) topped the polls Tuesday for Soccer America and TopDrawerSoccer.com. Cal also is ranked second to North Carolina in the coaches' poll, which is widely acknowledged as the most important ranking.

Stanford's women were ranked second to Virginia in the coaches' poll, while the Cal women are 11th and Santa Clara 20th.

"For our administration, alumni and soccer community, this is a fantastic moment," Cal coach Kevin Grimes said in a statement. "We understand that rankings will have an ebb and flow to them throughout a season."

  • Cal cruised to a 30-stroke victory at the Saint Mary's Invitational at Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside, shooting an 854 after 54 holes over two days of play. Michael Weaver (70-70-70 -- 210, 6 under) and Brandon Hagy (71-71-69 -- 211, 5 under) finished second and third individually. Saint Mary's (889) finished fifth in team play.

    High school

    D.J. Calhoun, a senior linebacker for the El Cerrito High football team, was selected to play in the 2014 U.S. Army All-American game. Calhoun, who is 6-foot-1, 215 pounds, has orally committed to play at USC. The game features the top high school football players in the nation and will be played in the Alamodome on Jan. 4.
