SANTA ANA -- John Velasco rushed for 155 yards and three touchdowns to lead the De La Salle High football team to a 35-10 nonleague victory against host Servite-Anaheim on Saturday night at Santa Ana Stadium.
The win was the 32nd consecutive victory for De La Salle (6-0), ranked No. 1 in the state by Cal-Hi Sports.
It was homecoming for Servite (3-2), but it was the visiting Spartans who made themselves at home, taking a 14-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. De La Salle scored on its opening drive, a five-play, 80-yard effort. Velasco opened the drive with a 66-yard run and capped it with a 3-yard scoring run.
The Spartans recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, with Jevari Anderson coming up with the ball on Servite's 10. Three plays later, Velasco scored on a 4-yard run.
De La Salle's defense held Servite scoreless through three quarters. Servite quarterback Travis Waller was sacked twice and intercepted twice, which pleased Spartans coach Justin Alumbaugh.
"I thought our defense did a good job," Alumbaugh said. "We really made them drive the whole field a lot."
Velasco was the head of a multifaceted rushing attack. Antoine Custer rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Chris Williams ran for 39 yards and scored on a keeper.
"We ran the ball well," Alumbaugh said. "I wish we would have completed a few more passes. Our passing game was a little stagnant."
Servite got on the board with 11:45 left on a 35-yard field goal by Andrew Acosta. De La Salle answered on the next possession, capping a 79-yard drive with a 12-yard scoring run by Velasco.
Servite ended the scoring on its next possession with a 29-yard scoring pass from Waller to Tony Brown.
The Spartans ended another Servite drive with less than two minutes left when Jonathan Lopez intercepted Waller at midfield.
"Overall it was a good effort," Alumbaugh said. "That's a really good team. We came down and it was a long way. I thought we did a really good job."
