News and notes from Stanford coach David Shaw's weekly press conference:
Henry Anderson's mid-September knee injury — he isn't due back for another month — left the unit undermanned.
Shaw and defensive coordinator Derek Mason considered several underclassmen for the role, then went to Kaumatule, who played defensive end in high school.
"If he had been seriously against it, we wouldn't have done it,'' said Shaw, whose team faces ninth-ranked UCLA on Saturday.
"With Anderson down, guys are playing a lot. We needed a spark, and Luke is a human spark."
Kaumatule has three catches for 16 yards.
Shaw compared Barr to former Jevon Kearse, a former NFL defensive rookie of the year and All-Pro selection.
The 13-member committee will be unveiled Wednesday.
West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck, the father of former Cardinal quarterback Andrew Luck, is also on the committee.
"The phrase 'halftime adjustments' is overused, but they have been unbelievably efficient,'' Shaw said. "Its something we've got to prepare ourselves for.''
