CONCORD -- With excellent field position for much of the first half, the De La Salle High football team made quick work of visiting James Logan on Friday night, winning a rematch of last season's North Coast Section Division I championship 49-7.

Logan had put together a five-game winning streak heading into its showdown with the Spartans but struggled to move the ball against De La Salle's defense.

Logan's minimal offense, combined with some miscues on punts, led to several short touchdown drives for De La Salle (7-0).

John Velasco powered his way into the end zone three times before the Spartans gave way to their backups midway through the third quarter.

A running clock was used for the entire fourth quarter.

"Tonight was a big step towards our goal of a state title," De La Salle senior Dasmond Tautalatasi said. "It was an outstanding night for our defense."

Logan (5-2) mustered just two first downs in the opening half, never getting the ball past midfield.

Sophomore Boss Tagaloa was in on two sacks for a Spartans defense that held Logan to 159 yards of total offense.

Ninety of those yards came against De La Salle's backups late in the third quarter on the Colts' touchdown drive.

Andrew Hernandez led the Spartans in rushing yards with 93, gaining most of them after the game was well in hand.

Antoine Custer added 80 for the Spartans.

But with the Spartans scoring on drives of 57, 37 and 16 yards in the first half, they didn't need to pile up a whole lot of offense.

"I thought our guys hit hard," De La Salle coach Justin Alumbaugh said. "That Logan team is good, their defense is good, their defensive line is good. I thought our offensive line blocked well and our runners ran hard."

De La Salle went into the locker room up 28-0 thanks to a special-teams score just before halftime.

The Spartans pounced after a bad snap to Logan's punter, knocking the ball loose for Jevari Anderson to corral in the end zone for a touchdown.

Anderson added a rushing score in the third quarter.
