The No. 3 Stanford women's volleyball team beat Cal 25-16, 22-25, 25-17, 25-21 Friday at Maples Pavilion in the final match of the regular season for both teams.
Junior opposite hitter Christina Higgins had 18 kills for the Bears (17-12, 10-10 Pac-12). Stanford improved to 24-5, 17-3.
Meanwhile, Jordan Shaw recorded 24 kills, the most ever by a Saint Mary's player in a three-game match, as the Gaels (18-9) closed the regular season with a 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 win over UTEP at McKeon Pavilion.
The local teams will learn their NCAA tournament fate Sunday. The NCAA Selection Show airs on ESPNU at 6:30 p.m.
Men's water polo
Despite four goals from senior captain Collin Smith, Cal lost to USC 12-9 in a first-round match of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament in Stockton. The fifth-seeded Golden Bears drop to 16-8 overall and will play UC Irvine in a consolation match at 10 a.m. on Saturday. USC, the No. 4 seed and five-time defending national champion, improved to 24-4.
